Germany Not Liking Heidi Klum So Much Right Now....

The well-respected German daily newspaper Bild is taking Germany's most famous reality TV show star, Supermodel Heidi Klum, to task for her new show called Germany's Next Top Model.

The newspaper recently ran a headline asking "Skinny Madness! Do you want THAT, Heidi Klum?" next to pictures of an anorexic 19-year-old named Lisa Pitney and Klum herself in a string bikini.

The heart of the debate being raised, according to the paper, is whether or not anorexia is a status symbol. Which in my POV deserves some attention. Of course, it's not ANOREXIA that is a status symbol, but looking almost anorexic without being one that's the demented standard. How ''bout an article on that topic?

Of course, Heidi's people have come back saying: "Heidi Klum says several times during the show that models must eat sensibly."

Hmmm... maybe Heidi needs a little lesson is "Do as I say and not as I do..."

Of course, I know zip about her eating habits, but considering there's so much hype about how quick she lost the baby weight after both of her pregnancies, and how she walked the red carpet at some awards (AND a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, fer cryin' out loud) just DAYS after giving birth..... it's probably pretty certain that she wasn't just eating whatever she craved.

(I haven't looked it up, but I bet we could find some mentions of the ol' "fast metabolism" excuse."

Salma Hayek Slams Skinny Celebrities

Full Disclosure: I didn't write that headline... the folks at Entertainmentwise did. But it was so good, I couldn't mess with it.

They're reporting that Salma recently said:

"I find it very boring to have to be skinny all the time. It bores me and makes me bitchy. And yet in Hollywood it's okay if you're a bitch - as long as you're skinny!"

"A lot of these girls who spend so much time trying to be skinny - everyone is complaining about them. They don't make people feel good about themselves."

That's nice, I think. It makes me like her, even though I don't think I've ever really liked any movie she's been in.

No matter. I'll like 'em more now!

What is going ON here?

Today's New York Post reported on a Beverly Hills skin doctor who is trying to get his 15 minuites of fame by doling out his own "awards." They're called Skinny Awards. (Lame name. Yawn)

Here's how the mention on Page Six goes:

"CELEB-obsessed Beverly Hills skin specialist Dr. Vail Reese is once again doling out dermatological disses with his annual "Skinny" awards. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie top the list with their myriad skin conditions, according to Reese's skinema.com. Pitt gets a Skinny for overcoming severe acne scars to become a sex symbol, and Jolie for her combination of moles, abdominal scars, tattoos and puffy lips - which Reese claims are not collagen-enhanced, as has been rumored. Tom Cruise's bride-to-be, Katie Holmes, gets called out for the unsightly cold sore she's been snapped sporting on her lower lip, while "Lost" star Evangeline Lilly gets a slap on her rear with a Skinny for the cellulite on her bum. Joaquin Phoenix gets respect for rising to leading-man status despite a prominent "cleft lip" scar on his face, which typically relegates actors to more villainous roles unless concealed by a mustache. Phoenix's "Walk the Line" co-star Reese Witherspoon gets props for refusing to bow to the Botox craze, which renders many a Tinseltown face expressionless. I can't figure out where this doc is going with things. On the one hand, he's all "Bravo Brangelina for over coming nature and looking good."

I can live with that.

But what's with the award to Lost's Evangeline Lilly?! Is he giving her an award because she's got cellulite on her bum and he thinks she needs to get it fixed? Or is he applauding her for having the courage to be on TV in a bikini all the time when she's less than perfect (not likely).

Has Dr. Reese not noticed that Evangeline couldn't get any skinnier?

Oh, and I guess it's good that he's praising Reese Witherspoon for holding off on the botox... but I think his quote about how she's eventually going to get "aging furrows" is really just a back handed ploy to make sure that she comes to see him.

Either way, Dr. Reese... you're all hype.

"Hospitality Suites" at celeb fests like Sundance.

I mean, what's with that? No wonder celebs lead such crazy fabulous lives. All they have to do is show up and get treated like this:

From today's Page Six:

"JOSH Hartnett making off with a $20,000 Krieger watch, $8,000 in Lia Sophia jewelry and $3,000 worth of Intermix duds (for girlfriend Scarlett Johansson) from the Marquee Hospitality Suite at Sundance . . . "

$31,000 dollars of free stuff just because they entertain us in the movies and fit contemporary definitions of beauty.

What the heck is WRONG with us?!

Truth be told, they look like they NEED $31,000 worth of new stuff in this photo.... but in all seriousness, the stories of swag that celebs are treated to are just offensive. Not to sound all hokey and shit but that money could make a world of difference someplace else. Just think what all those starving kids in Africa could do with a Krieger watch!

(KIDDING about that last bit.....I really do think celebs should refuse to be bribed at these events or donate most of what's showered on them to needy sources..... They've got no business--no business at all--accepting all of it in good conscience.)

According to the London Sun, Kate Moss has her knickers in a twist over the fact that actresses like Sienna Miller are appearing on magazne covers.

The article reads:

"Reformed cocaine addict Kate hit out while drinking with pals at the Ritz in Paris.

A source said: “She was loudly saying Sienna was not a professional model and SHE should be getting front covers — not an actress."

Um... uh...because there's a difference?

If you don't already have a copy of the February 2006 issue of Elle Girl, then run out and get one the second you finish reading this entry.

Flip on over the pg 78 and check out the Love Your Body article/survey results. There are tons of photos of real girls with captions like:

"I would rather be really healthy than thin"

and

"Everyone always sees something wrog with their body--get over it"

There are aslo amazing (not in a good way) stats thrown in like:

"Twenty years ago, U.S. models weighed about 8% less than the average woman. Today they weigh 23% less."

and

"Children as young as 5 are concernde with weight and shape. Over 80% of U.S. 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat, and over 50% of 9-and 10-year-olds feel better about themselves when they're on a diet."

Do articles like this contribute to the mixed messages in teen mags? Yep, they do. And I'm not trying to defend them against that. But they also expose teens to this thinking and these ideas in a context that teens respect and flock to. So it's not all bad....

Magazines and other forms of media have a lot of power, not only over what they choose to include, but what they choose to leave out. And imagine how much worse it would be if this great article had been left out.....

Woody Allen...Hype Buster?!

From the New York Post:

WOODY Allen says his "Match Point" star, Scarlett Johansson, should dress her age. Asked by fashionweekdaily.com what he thought of her style, the nebbishy auteur replied:

"I have had many conversations with Scarlett on this subject. The main thing I tell her is to simplify. I think that she dresses older than she should. I would tell her to wear her hair looser, to lessen the makeup and heavy red lipstick. Be more natural. It's a starlet thing. She is a beautiful girl, but I have told her to tone it down. I have told her to dress her age, instead of dressing like my Aunt Minnie."

Sounds like kind of a backward way of saying ix-nay on the hype-ay, Scarlett.
