Today is a special (not necessarily in a good way) day at Don't Believe the Hype.
There seems to be so much media coverage about skinny models and what's going on with their images in pop culture... that I've decided to create a new category for this topic alone.
Whoa.
These two photos are from the current issue of Star magazine, which is chronicling how several models have recently died due to complications from eating disorders.
I happened to pick it up at the same time that I started reading an article from the New York Times magazine dated November 26th, 2006 (writers get behind on their reading when they are trying to write!) called "One Spoonful at a Time: A Mother's Story of Trying to Treat Her Anorexic Daughter at the Kitchen Table." This AMAZING piece chronicles a mother's struggle to get battle her 14 year old daughter's anorexia and the methods they chose to use (something called the Maudsley method, where a family eats every meal with the eating disorder patient, and firmly, but lovingly insists that they eat. It's got lines like:
"She [meaning the author's daughter] sat in front of the cake, crying. She put down her fork, said her throat was closing, said that she was a horrible person, that she couldn't eat it, she just couldn't. We told her it was not a choice to starve. We told her she could do nothing until she ate--no TV, books, showers, phone, sleep. We told her we would sit at the table all night if we had to.
Still I was astonished when she lifted the first tiny forkful of cake to her mouth. It took 45 minutes to ear the whole piece. After she'd scraped the last but into her mouth, she lay her head on the table and sobbed, 'that was scary mom!'"
and
"After [the first day of high] school, she came home with a couple of friends she hadn't seen since spring. As I made milkshakes for all of them, I was surprised to hear [my daughter] Kitty say jokingly, ' We know all of the ice creams that have the most calories!' [because the family is helping her gain weight]
One friend said, "We want to know which ones have the least!"
"Yeah," chimed in another, "because my butt is huge!" Another girl said "I hate my thighs" and there was a chorus of agreement.
I offered "You girls are beautiful and healthy and strong." But I felt incredibly sad. Even face to face with the devastating effects of this disease, they were criticizing their bodies...."
****
It's an AMAZING article, and I highly recommend tracking it down at the library or on line because it really crystallizes just how much body hatred there is out there, and how much young women are participating in it.....

Today is not yesterday. We ourselves change. How then can our works and thoughts, if they are always to be fittest, continue always the same?
