Lots of buzz already about who's wearing what for Halloween. Well, here's a new one for ya:
It's the AnnaRexia costume--because as a Playboy bunny/porn star/sexy witch/french maid is apparently totally passe. This year, you can go as a sexy chick who's all skeletal skin and bones (and uh, boob implants).
For $42.95, you get: "Skeleton Costume includes Knit Dress with Glitter Screenprint, Headband, Choker Neckband, Removable “Anna Rexia” Badge and Ribbon Tie Belt."
Yeah, this costume is from an "adult" site...but it doesn't really matter. Before long it, or something like it, will trickle down to younger women. But more importantly: WHO came up with this? Does s/he live in a cave and no idea about cultural consequences? Does s/he earn so much money that they just don't care? Can s/he sleep at night knowing this is what they contribute to life on the planet?
Big questions... but someone has to ask them. And I want answers!
I read about this on another blog a little while ago; it's just horrifying. I wish people would acknowledge what a serious disease this is, instead of being so flippant about it. (And that's not even mentioning all the ways in which this is sexist, objectifying, and demeaning.) It's amazing to me how even people who *know* someone with anorexia can't grasp its severity, and something like this just makes it painfully obvious how some are either woefully uninformed or disturbingly emotionless.

It's mocking the sad society we live in. A society where people care more about social lives and self images built on physical attractiveness and acceptance than on what a person can accomplish. I pity people who deal with this, I really do...but the reason it's such a problem is because physical appearance is taken way too seriously. Someone having the mindset that they need to be unhealthy skinny is sad. It's not attractive to see someones ribcage through their skin, and as much as people research why this happens, they haven't found a 'cure'. As cold as this is, it's because people throw tantrums over crap like this. It's a costume, not a service announcement condemning anorexics. Lighten up...or continue taking physical appearance way too seriously, and making it more important than it is. Looks don't last forever, so I don't see why someone wants to die for them.

I think this blog entry I found pretty much sums up why I dislike this costume:

Maybe some people will see this as mocking our society; maybe that was even the point. But I guarantee you there will be MANY that see it as a sexy, funny (for the wrong reasons) costume. I love social satire, I love edgy humor, and I've had many friends with anorexia - I just cannot see the humor in this. It's like having a cancer costume, or a realistic suicide costume - it's unbelievably bad taste.

And to see how insensitive and unconcerned some of these retailers that carry the Anna Rexia costume are...check out the Ella Mental costume at 3 Wishes (Anna Rexia featured on the same page).

WTF?? Seriously??? I saw it at another site where the model wasn't done up like a sex kitten, and it seemed more okay there, but this is ridiculous...

Yeah your probably right, but we cannot deny what is the "In" thing right now, sexy just seems to be the thing to do. Does it leave some of our Morales behind, yes, but costumers are simply filling a want. There is a market of people who scream for these type of costumes, if there wasn't a demand then of course these types of costumes wouldn't be made, but the market is huge, so they'll continue to make them until the market extinguishes, which probably won't happen.

I can't believe that I haven't come across this costume before. It is very sad that as a society, women actually feel they have to look like a bag of bones. On one hand the costume is mocking the absurdness of sexiness being equated with skinny. On the other hand, I could see some women being offended by the costume.
